The Tale of Samuel's Calling - The Value of Listening to God

Writer: Tohar LianiTohar Liani

The story of Samuel's calling, as recounted in 1 Samuel 3, is a touching narrative that highlights the importance of listening to God. Samuel, a young boy serving in the temple under the priest Eli, has a divine encounter that shapes his future as one of Israel's esteemed prophets. His tale underscores the significance of tuning into God's voice and obeying with reverence and humility.

Samuel's journey commences with his mother, Hannah, who fervently prays for a child and promises to dedicate him to God if her prayers are answered. God grants her wish and Samuel is born. In keeping with her vow, Hannah brings Samuel to the temple at a tender age to assist Eli. Growing up in the temple, Samuel learns about priesthood practices and serves God faithfully.

One night, while resting in the temple, Samuel hears a voice calling his name. Thinking it is Eli summoning him, he rushes to Eli saying, "Here I am; you called me." Yet it wasn't Eli who called him but God. After three similar instances where Samuel obediently responds thinking it is Eli calling him each time.

After hearing the call for the third time, Eli realizes that it is the Lord reaching out to Samuel. He advises Samuel to reply with, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening" (1 Samuel 3;9).

Upon hearing the call again, Samuel follows Eli's instructions. The Lord then discloses a message to Samuel regarding a prophecy concerning Eli's family because of the wrongdoing of Eli's sons and his failure to control them. Despite the challenging nature of the message, Samuel dutifully delivers it to Eli the following morning. Eli accepts the prophecy, acknowledging it as divine guidance.

This moment signifies the start of Samuel's prophetic journey. As he matures, God continues to communicate with him and all of Israel acknowledges Samuel as a prophet of God. His life is characterized by his attentive listening to God and his obedience to divine instructions, establishing him as a significant figure in Israel's history.

Samuel's story offers valuable insights into listening to God;

Samuel's willingness to respond thoughtfully when he believed Eli was calling showcases his attentiveness and eagerness to serve. This willingness to heed a call is crucial for anyone who wishes to hear and follow God's voice.

Responding to God's call begins with being open and receptive to divine nudges. Samuel's humility and obedience shine through in his exchanges with Eli. Even when he was unsure of the source of the call initially, he chose to listen and follow guidance. Having a humble and teachable attitude is essential for recognizing and obeying God's voice.

The mentorship from Eli plays a crucial role in helping Samuel discern God's call. Eli's wisdom and experience assist Samuel in understanding how to respond appropriately. This highlights the significance of having mentors and spiritual guides who can aid us in recognizing God's voice and offering guidance on our spiritual paths.

Samuel's faithful delivery of a challenging message to Eli underscores the importance of integrity and bravery in answering God's call. Following God often involves delivering difficult messages or taking actions that may be daunting, but staying true to His instructions is key.

Samuel's consistent attentiveness to God throughout his life as a prophet showcases the ongoing importance of listening to Him. His life demonstrates that listening to God is not a one time occurrence but an ongoing practice that requires constant attention and obedience.

In today's world, Samuel's story inspires us to develop a habit of tuning in to God's voice. This means making room for prayer, contemplation and meditation, being receptive to divine guidance and seeking advice from trusted spiritual mentors. It also urges us to react with humility, obedience and bravery even when faced with challenging messages or uncertain paths.

Samuel's calling serves as a reminder that God can communicate with anyone, regardless of their age or social standing. Samuel was just a young boy when he first heard God's summons, emphasizing the importance of being attuned to God's voice at any phase of life. This prompts us to stay open to hearing God's call at all times and supporting the spiritual journeys of others, particularly the youth.

The account of Samuel's calling illustrates the significance of listening to God. Through his attentiveness, humility and obedience, Samuel laid the groundwork for his crucial role as a prophet in Israel. By embracing these virtues, we can nurture a deeper connection with God, respond faithfully to His callings and make meaningful contributions within our communities.
